If you recognize a dozen pieces by Chopin, chances are the Prelude in Db major will be one of them. At the top of the list, I suppose, would be the “Minute Waltz”, followed by Prelude in C Minor (you would know it if you heard it; it’s made appearances in a couple of pop songs, including Eric Carmen’s pop classic from the 70’s “All By Myself”), and another tune that escapes me at the moment - might be a Barry Manilow composition. Secondary familiar songs might include a couple pieces like his Ballad in G minor, or a Mazurka, another waltz or two, and few more of his Preludes, including this on in Db
minor.
For this lullaby version I have edited out the third section of the tune; the first two roll along gently at an easy pace with nothing to jolt the listener The next section, however, while not bombastic by any means, nonetheless would be difficult to perform in a way that sounded lullaby-ish; hence the shortened arrangement.
If you’re a musician, it’s interesting to note that this piece is in Db, which is arguably a dark, mellow key for some reason. This seems very odd, as the adjacent key above, D, is bright and happy sounding. I’m not really sure how that happens - I have a couple ideas, but have never researched this. Suffice it to say, the key of this little Chopin creation augments the already meditative tone of this gentle prelude....more
